My friend Alice gave me a groupon for Nick’s Cafe, so I decided to try that place with my friends. She recommended their weekend brunch. By the way, Alice also has her own travel and food blog at: gofindalice.com. Her website is amazing!
My friends and I ordered:
Grilled Chicken Eggs Benedict
Hash Brown Eggs Benedict
Triple Threat Waffles
And of course, the free coffee on weekends.
My first impression of Nick’s Cafe when I was driving there was, “Where am I? Did I get the wrong address?” I drove through the Los Angeles Chinatown and to an almost-barren street. My GPS said I was 600 feet from my destination and it wasn’t until I drove up closer to the restaurant that I found it. There is a private parking lot but spaces are limited. When I got there, my friends were already waiting in line.
- Hash Brown Eggs Benedict: The soft texture of the hash brown really complements the warm yolk from the eggs. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if more brunch places start making this addition to their menus.
- Triple Threat Waffles: The waffles were topped with chocolate sauce and butterscotch chips. Some may think the butterscotch chips make the waffles too sweet. Since I have cravings for sweets almost every day, I found it really yum.
- Traditional diner setting: Think table counters and stools. This is pretty much how the interior of Nick’s Cafe looks. It’s not easy to find a restaurant that looks as traditional as Nick’s Cafe anymore.
- Grilled Chicken Eggs Benedict: My friend ordered the Grilled Chicken Eggs Benedict, hoping to get a different taste. The normal eggs benedict options are florentine, smoked salmon and the regular eggs benedict. We all thought the grilled chicken option would be very different and would taste really well. However, it didn’t really have the “wow” factor I was hoping for.
In general, I would probably try other brunch places first. However, I might still return to Nick’s Cafe to try its other special weekend brunch options.
