Yamataka Seafood Market
2/F, Wanchai Ferry Pier
It took me a while to visit the Yamataka Seafood Market after all the hyped-up anticipation that it would resemble Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji market. It wasn’t until my friends sent me info about Yamataka’s collaboration with Hello Kitty that I finally mustered up enough energy to trek all the way to the island side on one of my rare day offs. I have to mention that I finally understand how hard it is for people to live on the island side to cross to the dark side if they live and work on the island. I rarely find myself on the island side now that I spend most of my time in the Peninsula pastry kitchen and the remaining time in my bed.
Let me get this out first: Yamataka x Hello Kitty was disappointing.
My favorite part of the tuna.
I couldn’t resist ordering these but they were cold and had a hardened layer, which made it easy to tell these were made in advance.
Perhaps the most disappointing dish was the Hello Kitty chirashi. We were served meager bits of of sashimi end cuts. Definitely not satisfying even if you lower your expectations because you know you’re paying for the Hello Kitty-shaped chirashi instead of quality food.
The collaboration only lasts until the end of May so for all the Hello Kitty lovers who want to go for yet another Hello Kitty dining experience, pencil in that sushi date!
