Right after we landed in New Chitose and picked up our car to drive to Sapporo to check into our boutique hotel and drop off our luggage, we headed straight to a restaurant we made reservations for in advance.

My sister found out about Sekkatei, which is known for their crabs and thus, we kicked off our Hokkaido trip with an all-crab feast.

Grilled Kinki Fish Before going into details of our King Crab courses, the highlight of the night was the grilled Kinki. The fish was seared on both sides and cooked to perfection. We tried the grilled Kinki at other restaurants throughout our trip but this was definitely the best we had.

Red King Crab Delicacy Sekkatei didn't reveal much but this amuse-bouche was also made using chilled Red King Crab (aka Taraba Crab).

Red King Crab Sashimi Sekkatei paired the king crab sashimi with other Japanese vegetables. Loved the chewy vermicelli / bean-thread-looking pairing as pictured!

Grilled Red King Crab We realized that the restaurant did not use fresh king crabs but the grilled king crab was still pretty good.

Red King Crab Shabu Shabu This was perhaps the biggest disappointment throughout the meal because we were expecting the restaurant to serve fresh crab meat but they decided to serve frozen crab meat instead.

Red King Crab Tempura This was one of the highlights of the night. The tempura layer was very thin and crisp, which gave it nice crunch when we bit into the tempuras.

Red King Crab Sushi By the time our sushis were served, we were stuffed and frankly speaking, had enough of king crabs. The sushis would be perfect for those with a bigger appetite and need something extra to feel more satisfied.

By the end of our meal, we felt like we had enough of King crabs for the trip (which was of course a lie since we didn’t visit the Nijo Market yet). Our prix fixe dinner costed around $847 HKD per person but after realizing that they were using frozen meat, we realized that Kanizen in Wanchai is a pretty good value for what you get.

Happy eating,
Joey ♥
