Butao Ramen | 豚王
G/F, 40 Tang Lung Street,
Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
After reading reviews on Open Rice and hearing many great things about Butao Ramen from my friends, I finally made up my mind to find this little ramen store in one of the alleys in Causeway Bay. With the help of my friend Vivian, we had no trouble finding it.
Here’s a big tip if you really want to try this ramen store. Go there early to avoid the lines. We went there around 6:30 PM for dinner, which is considered early for the local Hong Kong dinner time. We only had to wait for ten minutes before we were seated. Don’t expect comfortable seats since the ramen store is very small and they try to squeeze as many customers in as possible.
I ordered the regular flavor Butao Ramen with cabbage. I had my hopes up and expected great things from this place because it was among one of the highest-rated ramen places in Hong Kong (at least that’s the impression it gave me).
I was quickly disappointed when my ramen came. The broth was too oily for my liking and the broth was just so-so. It’s hard for me to write this review, since I am comparing Butao Ramen with some of my favorite ramen places in Los Angeles (Tsujita and Daikokuya, even though many are already voting Daikokuya off of their ramen lists). If you have to line up for more than 15 minutes to get seated, I would say it’s not worth the wait time. However, if you are a local Hong Konger and love ramen, I can understand why this might be your favorite ramen place.
While chatting with my friend, I had an epiphany. We discussed how most of the cafes and restaurants in Hong Kong cannot be compared in terms of taste and quality to the cafes in Los Angeles. Why is that? Hong Kong is known to be a food heaven! Our tastebuds may have been slightly Americanized.
